Lord Sriman Narayana creates, protects and dissolves the multiverses as expounded by the Vedas. He is appearing in Archa form, i.e idol forms in Temples so that humans can worship him and attain all earthly prosperous benefits like health, wealth, knowledge, leading a good life that is harmless to other living beings etc and eventually attain his Lotus feet at Sri Vaikuntam.
The worshipping protocols are defined in Sastra known as "Agamas". The primary agama sastra among all is the Sri Vaikhanasa Bhagavad Sastra defined by Sri Vikhanasa Muneendra, who is none other than the 'Ourasa' putra - the dear son of Sriman Narayana.
